Excerpts from Sun Sentinel:
Sixteen months ago, Frenzel left her job at a Fort Lauderdale tea shop to focus on her art. "So far, it's been working out pretty good," she says.
She isn't rolling in the dough, but she's doing what she loves — painting what she describes on her website as "geeky/campy things," and doing "freelance baking" for weddings, parties, banquets and other events. The former culinary student, who once was planning a career as a culinary scientist, baker and cake decorator, says she couldn't afford to remain in culinary school after the first year, but she continues her studies using cookbooks and textbooks.
The money she makes baking helps her to continue making the art she's become increasingly passionate about.
She'll also draw someone as a dinosaur, turn them into a cartoon or create a kitty-cat adventure or digital illustration for just $5 through Fiverr.com.
"I like to price my work reasonably, because I want people to collect art and just have fun with it," Frenzel says. "Sometimes, you'll see a little 5-inch painting, and people will sell it for a hundred bucks. And that's awesome. Way to go. But some people can't afford $100, so I like being able to say, 'You like this little kitty in space? $5.' They get excited."
Frenzel says she's always doodling, anyway. "If I can get $1 or $5 to do that, that's awesome," she says.
