FAQ
How should I prepare a mix for mastering?
My general advice would be to disable master insert effects, and export a 32-bit .wav at the sampling rate of the recorded material. If you are using digital plugins then some mileage could be gained from using 48khz+ over 44.1khz due to the roll off from Nyquist filters.
Should I disable all inserts on the master bus?
Disable limiting on the master bus. Effects on the master are fine if they are a part of the song; however, for best results you want a mix that is dynamic and balanced. If you mix into master inserts I would recommend turning them off and try to fix any issues that might have been masked by them.
What file type should I use?
.wav, any other lossless file type is also fine.
What bit depth shoud I use?
32-bit or 24-bit. 32-bit will allow me to recover any information above 0 DBFS if your track is mixed loud. Any clipping in 24-bit or less is baked in.
What sample rate should I use?
Generally 48khz or higher, but this depends on what sampling rate you used to record/create the song.
What if I don't have access to edit the mix and/or I only have an 8-bit mono mp3 at 16khz?
I'll work with whatever you have, these are just settings for maximizing fidelity.
