I've written bios, long and short, for many different purposes, the most common of which is website copy. Bands often need bios, anyone trying to create an online portfolio needs a bio. If it's for a CD or something short, like above, probably 50 to 100 words.
For a band, 300 to 550. 
For a professional who wants it to take up a sizable amount of a web page, perhaps longer, 550 to 1000 words.
