Absolutely, I never work in the core files. I create a separate custom plugin for the modifications so that future updates won't wipe out the modifications.
Do you prefer customization over 3rd party plugins.
No, I consider myself a SOLUTION PROVIDER. Therefore, I always try to come up with the most feasible solution. That solution could be a 3rd party plugin, a combo of multiple plugins or customization in the code.
