Running a Linux VPS on default settings? Open ports, password logins and missing updates are how most small servers get broken into. I lock yours down.
What I do:
- Set up a firewall with only the ports you need
- Move SSH to key-only login and disable root password access
- Turn on automatic security updates
- Higher packages add fail2ban, backups with a tested restore, monitoring and a written report
How I work: I take a snapshot or backup first and keep a second SSH session open while changing access, so you can't get locked out. I change one thing at a time and send you a plain-English summary.
Works with Ubuntu and Debian servers. Not included: Windows servers, or fixing a server that has already been compromised.
