What do I mean by a sample edit? Two things, really: You'll see how expert editing makes your manuscript better, and you'll get a seasoned professional's custom offer.
Here's how it works:
- I'll select a few pages and show you what revisions I would suggest on those pages
- You'll see what my input is like
- Then we can discuss a custom offer
Think of it as our first day of working together. Starting from this experience, we'll both have confidence that my support fits your needs. The first day will be paid for, and we'll have an agreement on how to arrange the rest of the project. Easy peasy!
A sample edit can be a valuable way to agree exactly how you would like me to work on your prose. It often leads to lower fees than my other Gigs' per-word rates suggest.

FAQ
Can you do my research or composition for me?
No. That would be like doing your homework for you, and I firmly believe the real work needs to be your own. I only work on finished drafts, even if they are rough drafts, and even though they may need a lot of editing before they are ready!
Can I trust you with my manuscript?
Absolutely. I will show full respect for your intellectual property and will only use the material you send me in my work for you. It goes nowhere else as far as I am concerned.
Can you help me find a journal where I may submit my work?
Yes! I can help you with that once we have settled on the main revisions. And if you already have an idea of where you would like to have the work published, I can tailor my editing to the style required at that journal.
If I ask you to edit my whole paper after the sample edit, will you deduct the fees you charged for the sample edit?
Yes I will. As long as you have introduced no new writing to those passages I will have sampled and edited, you will only need to pay for my work on the rest of the manuscript. :-)
Can you explain how you set your fees?
Certainly. These fees are calculated by the word, and I add a bit for time spent arranging our work together. My fees are based on the Editorial Freelancers Association's chart of editorial rates. These are widely regarded as standard for the industry. (I am also a member of the EFA.)
