Calligraphy continues to flourish in the forms of wedding invitations and event invitations, font design and typography, original hand-lettered logo design, religious art, announcements, graphic design and commissioned calligraphic art, cut stone inscriptions, and memorial documents and tattoos.

Calligraphy allows you to see each word and phrase, the way a painting allows you to put words to the story depicted – this art form emphasizes the beauty and history of the written word.

A simple way to put it is that calligraphy is a style of writing, hand-lettering is an illustrative art, and typography is the technique of using letters in graphic design. What gets confusing is when typography has calligraphic or hand-lettering qualities.

Start by measuring the height and width of the design you want to get. Next, convert it into inches – tattoos are almost always measured in inches and square inches. So when you work out what you want, make sure you make a note of your tattoo size in inches.

In general, a tattoo under 2 inches is tiny, something 2 to 4 inches is small, 4-6 inches is medium, and 6 or more inches is large. It is important to understand that these sizes are subjective though. Each tattoo artist will have to determine their sizes and how they price them.
