Your hardware can do much more than run one OS. I install Proxmox VE, the free open source hypervisor, and turn your machine into a full homelab.
I run this hypervisor in my own production environment: three hosts and about 150 containers and VMs in daily use. This is what I do every day, not a tutorial I followed once.
What I can set up for you:
- Fresh install on your server, mini PC, NUC or VPS (Hetzner, OVH and others)
- - VMs and LXC containers: Home Assistant, TrueNAS, OPNsense, pfSense, Windows, Docker
- - ZFS or LVM storage, network bridges and VLANs
- - Backups with vzdump or PBS, tested with a real restore
- - GPU passthrough for Jellyfin or Plex transcoding and local AI
- - WireGuard or Tailscale VPN to reach everything safely from anywhere

Will Proxmox run on my mini PC or old desktop?
Almost certainly yes. Proxmox VE runs well on NUCs, mini PCs, old desktops, laptops and rack servers. 8 GB of RAM is a workable minimum for a couple of services; 16 GB or more gives you room to grow. Send me your specs and I will tell you honestly.
Do you need physical access to my machine?
No, everything is done remotely. For a fresh install you boot the Proxmox installer from USB while we are in touch, then I take over via SSH and the web interface. On a VPS (Hetzner, OVH and others) no physical step is needed at all.
Can you migrate my existing VMs from VMware ESXi or Hyper-V?
Usually yes. I migrate VMs from ESXi and Hyper-V to Proxmox, and physical machines to VMs. Message me first with what you are running so I can confirm it and give you an honest estimate of the downtime involved.
Is it safe to give you access to my server and data?
Fair question. A sudo user is enough (never share your root password), I can list every command I run, and nothing is copied off your machine. When we finish, delete my user and rotate credentials - I will remind you to. Your data stays on your server at all times.
