About this Gig
I'm an avid reader and lover of good stories, and my background in scientific research, writing, and editing has given me a good eye for picking out detail (especially as science writing is so awful!). Let me use my skills as a reader, lover of stories, and editor to read your story as your audience will and then provide positive critique as an editor to help you take your story to where it needs to go.
You can expect:
- A detailed reader report (3+ pages) including my impressions as a reader and a helpful critique of your work examining plot, setting, characters, stakes, tension, point-of-view, momentum, pace, voice, and show and tell, with a highlight of the story's strengths, what requires extra work, and suggested next steps.
I am not your target audience if your book is "spicy", glorifies abuse, or is LGBTQ+ focussed.
Additionally, this is not an editing service. However, I do offer sample line- and copy-editing (one page of edits) to demonstrate how editing could enhance your writing as an addition to the offered packages.

How do you protect the confidentiality of my work?
I will not share or publish any of your work that you provide to me. I will delete any files you send to me within 7 days of completing the gig.
Do you have a policy on working with manuscripts written using AI?
Yes, I do. While I don't have an issue with assistive AI (such as spelling and grammar checkers), I am against the use of generative AI in creative works. If generative AI was used in the creation or editing of your work, I am not the right beta reader for you.
Can you address specific concerns and questions I have about my story?
Yes! Please let me know if there are particular things you want me to look out for or consider while I am reading your work, and I will make sure I include these.
Will you edit my mistakes?
No. This is not an editing service. It is an in-depth critique of your work coming from the perspective of your reader. I may flag some errors that I see, especially if they are consistent. I do offer sample editing or can create a custom editing job for you if you want to polish your manuscript.
I need tough love (or maybe I need you to be gentle!). Can you adjust how you deliver feedback to suit my needs?
Sure. Just let me know what you prefer. I try to be objective in how I deliver feedback, but if you want something a bit harsher (like channelling the hardest reviewers on Good Reads) or you want constructive feedback wrapped in cotton wool to preserve your feelings, let me know.
Do you beta read genres other than romance?
Yes. Check out my other gigs or contact me directly, but please note I'm a sensitive soul, so anything horror, erotica, or gratuitous violence might not be a good fit for me.
