About this Gig
Have you written a children's book but aren't sure if your target audience will be able to read it? Let me help! I'll simplify your word choice and shorten your sentences, making your text read at a particular grade level. This service is a great fit for authors of easy readers and chapter books. I use a variety of tools, including vocabulary word lists and readability checkers, to ensure that young kids can read your manuscript all by themselves. Please note that all my edits are performed manually; I do not use generative AI (Chat GPT).
And guess what? I'll assess whether your manuscript needs to be simplified in the first place--for free. Please contact me before placing an order so I can let you know whether I recommend my service for your story and give you an accurate quote.

FAQ
How do you provide feedback on manuscripts?
I'll use the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word to provide you with a marked-up copy. If you'd like a clean copy with all of the changes incorporated, please let me know when you place your order. Please contact me if your file is in a format other than MS Word.
Do you do beta reading or developmental/substantive editing?
Not at this time. I work on drafts that are essentially complete and need sentence-level edits only. If you'd like feedback on your plot/characters or require content editing, please seek a manuscript evaluator or developmental editor first.
Do you work on rhyming books?
I am happy to copyedit a rhyming book to correct errors, but I will not simplify it. This is because doing so usually affects the rhyme and rhythm. I recommend contacting a developmental editor if you think your rhyming book needs to be simplified.
Does this gig include copyediting/proofreading?
It does! While I simplify your text, I'll also correct errors in spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation, and will flag inconsistencies. If you'd like a copyedit only, please see my copyediting gig!
Why don't you use generative AI (such as Chat GPT) when you edit?
There are copyright and confidentiality issues with generative AI. Chat GPT has been "fed" thousands of copyrighted works without the copyright holders' consent. If your manuscript is put into AI, then the app may "spit out" pieces of your work to other Chat GPT users. I do all my editing manually.
Why don't you edit children's books written by generative AI (ex. Chat GPT)?
I have chosen to edit creative works written only by humans. There are a host of privacy and copyright issues with generative AI (see other my other FAQ about generative AI). Additionally, it's important for authors to know that work created with generative AI cannot be copyrighted.
