FAQ
What is copy editing?
Copyediting is a line-by-line review of your manuscript for grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling, word usage, capitalization, hyphenation, accuracy, and consistency. I correct errors and refine the prose while preserving your unique voice and style, leaving you with a clean, polished manuscript.
What type of editing does my manuscript need?
If you're satisfied with your book's content and structure, copyediting is the next step for correcting errors and inconsistencies. For structural changes, substantive editing, or broader analysis, I recommend developmental editing and line editing first.
Do your services include developmental editing, line editing, and proofreading?
Proofreading is included, as it is an integral part of copyediting. Developmental editing and line editing are not among my services, but you can find many talented professionals on this platform who specialize in them.
In which format must I submit my manuscript?
Please submit it as a single MS Word document (.doc or .docx). I use Microsoft Word Track Changes feature so you can easily review and accept or reject my suggested edits.
What is Microsoft Word's Track Changes?
Microsoft Word's Track Changes records edits made to a document, allowing you to review each change and choose whether to accept or reject it. This ensures that you always retain control over the final draft. If you are unfamiliar with Track Changes, videos on YouTube can show you how to use it.
Do you make edits manually?
Yes. I review every sentence and word and make all edits manually. Automated tools can flag potential errors based on general writing rules, but accurate copyediting requires human understanding of language, context, nuance, and authorial intent that automated tools cannot replicate.
For which variety of English do you offer copyediting services?
I offer copyediting in US English, following The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), the predominant style guide for fiction publishing in the United States.
Are revisions included?
Yes, one round of revisions is included to correct any errors missed during the initial pass. This covers oversights within the agreed scope of copyediting, not new editorial requests, changes of preference, or expansion of the work beyond what was originally submitted.
What do I receive upon completion of your service?
You will receive a Microsoft Word document containing all my suggested edits in Track Changes, which you can review, accept, or reject. Once you have approved the edits, you can forward the document to your book formatter or typesetter for the next stage of production.
Can you format my book afterward?
Yes. I also offer professional book design and eBook formatting services. Please see the Book Design and eBook Formatting gigs on my profile for more information.
