I will tell a story about kane

Kane kept the lighthouse because nobody else would. The island had three stubborn goats, one dock, and a sky that never quite decided between storm and apology. Each dusk he climbed the spiral stairs, lit the lamp, and watched the dark gather like a held breath.

One night a boat without lights drifted in. A girl stepped onto the dock carrying a sealed envelope and a name she would not say. She asked only for dry clothes and a place to wait until dawn. Kane gave her both and asked nothing. At first light she was gone. The envelope remained, weighted by a smooth black stone.

He opened it. Inside: a map of the same island, drawn years before he arrived, with his own handwriting in the margin: Do not let her leave.

Kane looked at the empty dock. The lamp still burned. Far out, a pale wake cut the water. He did not chase it. He climbed the stairs, trimmed the wick, and kept the light true. Some promises, he knew, are meant to be broken only once. The sea kept its counsel. Kane stayed on.
