I will create a professional, polished index for your book
About this Gig
NOTE: Please contact me before ordering so that we can discuss your requirements. I'm looking forward to working with you!
Welcome! I'm a professional back-of-the-book indexer who completed indexing training at Simon Fraser University. As a former academic with a PhD in Classics, I enjoy the challenge of creating an accessible, organized index that allows your readers to find exactly what they are looking for in your book.
I never outsource my work or use AI. As your indexer, I will read every word of your text, marking it up for key names and concepts. I will use specialized indexing software to record these entries, producing a professional, clean index. At the end of the project, I'll carefully edit the index, rereading the entries to make sure that each one is useful, relevant, and accurate.
I'm Canadian, but I'm also comfortable working with American and British English.
My background as a teacher has helped me communicate with clients in a nonjudgmental, constructive way. I treat each project like its my own, and I'm looking forward to working with you! Please see my FAQ, and reach out if you have any other questions!

FAQ
Why do I need an index?
For many readers, the index is their first entry point into a book. Your readers will expect a polished, professional index that gives them many access points to your text. Hiring an indexer is the best way to make sure that your book will make a great first impression!
What will the final product look like?
We will discuss your requirements, including style and alphabetization, when you place an order. Generally, I will deliver a Word document with your index in a single column so that you or your team can format it.
I wrote my book—shouldn’t I write the index, too?
Indexers go through rigorous training and practice, teaching us how to approach your text from a reader’s perspective. We know how to offer a variety of terms, and how to break up headings for easy access. This is a great time to hand the work over to a professional.
Can’t I use AI to write my index for me?
Generative AI is really terrible at writing indexes! Indexers have found that AI misses major concepts, ignores whole chapters of books, and even hallucinates entire pages. The last thing you want is an index that might look good on the surface, but won’t help your reader find information.
Why does it cost so much to get an index created?
A professional indexer reads every word of your book, and carefully considers the best way to index the information so your readers can find exactly what they need. A good index is far more than a word list; it is a map to your work.
