FAQ
How do I know if a wall is load‑bearing?
If you're unsure, send me your floor plan and I can advise. Generally, walls perpendicular to floor joists, walls directly above other walls, and exterior walls are load‑bearing. My calculation assumes you have identified the wall as load‑bearing. If not, I can still size a beam.
Can you size a beam for a roof opening or a floor opening?
Yes. I size beams for floors, roofs, and ceilings. Specify whether it's supporting a roof only, a floor only, or a floor + roof combination. Load combinations differ.
What materials can you specify?
Wood (Douglas fir, SPF, Southern pine), LVL (Microllam, Versa‑Lam), glulam, steel I‑beam (W, S, M shapes), and flitch beams (steel plate between wood). Let me know your preference or I will recommend the most cost‑effective option for your span and load.
Do I need a PE stamp for my beam sizing report?
Many building departments require a PE stamp for structural alterations, especially when removing a load‑bearing wall. I offer a PE stamp for any US state in the Premium package. Check with your local building department to confirm their requirement.
