The editing funnel refers to the way editing needs to be done from large-scale issues to small-scale issues. You start with developmental/structural editing to ensure the plot and characters are solid, then move to line editing, then to proofreading (after the book is typeset).

For most people, no. Most novels need developmental or structural editing before they are ready for line editing. This is because of the editing funnel. A line editor addresses scene, paragraph, and word-level issues. If you sill have narrative issues, a line edit will not be helpful.

One good clue is if you've already worked with a developmental editor (DE). Another good clue is that the word count is within your genre's optimal range. But really, the best way to know is to ask an editor! Send me a message. I'll take a look to see if there are any signs that you need a DE first.
