How do you control what the players see?
If this is an SP level, I use landscape and landmarks to face players toward the scene I want them to see. I also use different camera angles so players could not miss a clue. For MP levels, a cover system and landmarks will be used. You can only anticipate the player's movement on your level.
What about the overall performance and optimization?
I check the assets and textures before using them on the level. If necessary, I reduce texture sizes and ask reduction of vertices of models. Lighting can tank the FPS, so I carefully check every light and also shadow to increase FPS.
