What is beta reading?
Beta reading gives you feedback on how your finished manuscript feels to an actual reader. Rather than editing the book, I'll focus on my reading experience: where I'm engaged, where my attention drops, what lands emotionally, what confuses me and my overall response to the story.
What's the difference between beta reading and an editorial assessment?
Beta reading tells you how your manuscript feels to a reader. An editorial assessment looks at why the manuscript is or isn't working from an editorial perspective and provides detailed analysis and revision priorities. Do you use AI to beta read my manuscript?
No. Your manuscript will be read by me. I don't use generative AI to read or analyse your work, generate feedback, or write your reader report. Your writing and ideas remain yours, and I won't upload your manuscript to generative AI tools.
Can I ask specific questions about my manuscript?
Yes! You can include up to 10 questions you'd like me to answer from a reader's perspective. These could be about a character, relationship, reveal, ending, confusing section, emotional response or anything else you're unsure about.
Will you leave comments throughout my manuscript?
This service focuses on the reader report rather than extensive in-text comments. I'll take notes as I read so I can give you specific examples in my feedback, but if you're looking for detailed comments throughout the manuscript, my Developmental Editing service is a better fit.
Do you work with genres outside those listed?
Possibly! My main focus is horror and supernatural fiction, dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction, fantasy and LitRPG, but I'm happy to consider adjacent speculative fiction. Send me a little information about your manuscript and I'll let you know if I'm a good fit.
