About this Gig
Hi! I'm Heather, a UK-based fiction editor specialising in speculative fiction, particularly horror and supernatural fiction, dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction, fantasy, and LitRPG. I work with both UK and US books.
An developmental edit comes in when your draft is complete but you may need or want some in-depth structural advice.
What I'll look at
Developmental editing is about how your story works as a whole. Depending on your manuscript, I'll look at:
- Structure and pacing
- Character arcs and motivation
- Plot and continuity
- POV and narrative consistency
- Worldbuilding
- Themes and emotional payoff
- Scenes or story elements that aren't pulling their weight
- Missed opportunities or areas that need further development
What you'll receive
You'll get:
- Your annotated manuscript with extensive developmental comments throughout
- A detailed editorial report bringing together the bigger patterns I've identified
- Clear, actionable revision priorities
- Notes on both what isn't working and what is

FAQ
What is developmental editing?
Developmental editing looks at the bigger picture of your manuscript rather than spelling and grammar. I’ll focus on areas such as structure, pacing, plot, character arcs, POV, continuity, worldbuilding and themes, with extensive comments throughout the manuscript and editorial report.
Do you use AI when editing my manuscript?
No. Your manuscript will be read and developmentally edited by me. I don’t use generative AI to read or analyse your work, generate editorial feedback, or write your report or manuscript comments. Your writing and ideas remain yours, and I won’t upload your manuscript to generative AI tools.
Will you rewrite my manuscript for me?
No. I may suggest alternative approaches or give examples where useful, but I won’t rewrite your story in my own voice. My job is to understand what you’re trying to achieve and help you strengthen the manuscript while keeping it yours.
Do you proofread or copy edit as part of this service?
No. This gig is specifically for developmental editing, so I’ll be looking at the story rather than correcting every spelling, grammar or punctuation issue. I may flag language-level problems when I notice a recurring pattern, but this isn’t a copy edit or proofread.
My manuscript falls between your package word counts. What should I order?
Send me a message with your manuscript’s word count and I can create a custom offer based on the actual length. You don’t need to pay for an 80,000-word package if your manuscript is only 50,000 words!
Do you work with genres outside those listed?
Possibly! My main focus is horror and supernatural fiction, dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction, fantasy and LitRPG, but I’m happy to consider adjacent speculative fiction. Send me a little information about your manuscript and I’ll let you know if I’m a good fit.
What are series development notes?
If your book is part of a planned series, I can also look at how it functions within that wider story. This can include ongoing character arcs, unresolved plot threads, continuity, setup for later books and whether this instalment feels satisfying while leaving room for what comes next.
