FAQ
What is a CM4 / CM5 carrier board?
A carrier board is a custom PCB that hosts the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 or 5. It provides the power, connectors, and interfaces the CM4/CM5 needs to function PCIe, USB, HDMI, CSI, DSI, Ethernet, GPIO, and storage. I design it to your exact interface and form factor requirements.
What interfaces can you include on the carrier board?
I design carrier boards with PCIe Gen 2/3, USB 3.0 / 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0, CSI camera, DSI display, 40 pin GPIO header, M.2 NVMe, eMMC programming, USB C PD power, RTC, CAN Bus, RS 485, and custom industrial I/O interfaces.
How many PCB layers does a CM4/CM5 carrier board need?
Minimum 4 layers for reliable signal integrity 2 signal layers plus dedicated ground and power planes. For complex designs with PCIe Gen 3, USB 3.0, and HDMI, 6 layers provide better impedance control and EMI performance. I recommend layer count based on your interface requirements.
Do you handle the high density 200 pin CM4/CM5 connector routing?
Yes. The CM4 and CM5 use a 200 pin high density connector (two 100 pin Hirose connectors). I handle the full breakout routing differential pairs for PCIe, USB, HDMI, and CSI/DSI with correct impedance matching, length tuning, and reference plane continuity.
Can you design a custom form factor carrier board?
Yes. I design carrier boards in any form factor mini ITX, Raspberry Pi HAT size, compact industrial, panel mount, or fully custom dimensions. I also design boards with specific mounting hole patterns, connector cutouts, and enclosure matched layouts.
Do you design the power supply section for the CM4/CM5?
Yes. The CM4/CM5 requires 5V input with specific current capacity. I design the full power section USB C PD input, DC barrel jack, PMIC integration, 3.3V and 1.8V LDO regulators, and power sequencing ensuring stable operation across all CM interfaces.
Will the carrier board design pass DFM and be ready to fabricate?
Yes. All designs are verified with DRC and DFM checks against JLCPCB and PCBWay rules. Gerber files, drill files, BOM, and stackup spec are delivered manufacture-ready. You can upload directly to your fab house without any modifications.
