FAQ
What is developmental editing and how is it different from checking grammar and spelling?
Editing is done at different levels. Developmental editing looks at the big picture - story, plot, character, scene impact, theme. Other types of editing - copy editing and proofreading - are more focused on details and on polishing a script that is past the developmental stage.
Can you do every type of editing at once?
Not effectively. If editing is renovating a house, then developmental editing is fixing up the framing; copy editing is patching the drywall; and proofreading is painting. There is no point in painting before the drywall is patched, and no point in drywalling before reframing.
