For those who have never had a bio before, it's an essential way to communicate your experience, expertise and authority. If this is not your first bio, you already know that it is like a resume, in that it requires updates from time to time, and that sometimes you will need a new version to best communicate who you are to a new or emerging audience.
Its probably easiest to understand what a good bio can do if you compare it to an expert head shot taken by a high-end photographer. The photo will show you in the best possible light, putting the emphasis on your very best features -- and so will the bio. They are a pleasure to write for that reason.

Do I need to consider who will be reading my bio?
Yes! Bios are most effective if they target specific audiences. The bio you'll need if you’re giving a speech to a target interest group should probably be different than the more general bio you'll need on your company website, where your qualifications for your role there matter most.
What information will you need to write a bio?
The more information I have, the better your bio will be. At a minimum, I'll need a copy of your resume, LinkedIn page, and any existing bios or profiles. But if you have done any professional interviews, or if you have been referenced in any articles, I urge you to share that too.
Is there anything else I need to prepare for the bio?
Spend a little time thinking about which awards, facts, figures, quotes, degrees, interests and promotions are worth mentioning to your target audience. What will mean the most to them?
