What is MASTERING anyway?
Mastering is first and foremost LISTENING! Once I as the engineer have an understanding of your project and it's character, I'll start using the tool at my disposal - EQ, Compression, Stereo Width, Mid/Side Tools, Clipping, Limiting, Saturation and even Reverb to take your mix to another level!
Can you fix a MIX in MASTERING?
Yes... but you shouldn't look to a mastering engineer to make a bad mix sound great. If the mix isn't where you want it to be, then keep working on it until it is, or send it to a PROFESSIONAL mixing engineer (like me!)
What are LUFS and should a MASTER be aiming for Spotify's specification on -14lufs
LUFS stand for Loudness Unit Full Scale and is the best way we currently have to measure loudness the way our HUMAN ears perceive it. Regarding Spotify's specification... The short answer is no. If you master to -14lufs your master will be VERY quiet compared to other professionally mastered tracks
