What is an AI engineer, versus a data scientist?
A data scientist explores and models. An AI engineer ships. I build the thing that runs in production - the integration, the failure handling, the deployment, the monitoring. If you need research, hire a scientist. If you need it working next month, that's this.
Do I need my own OpenAI or Claude account?
Yes, and you should want that. You keep ownership of your keys, your usage and your data. I'll help you set it up and pick the right tier, but the account stays yours.
How much will the AI itself cost to run?
That depends on volume and model, and it's one of the first things I'll estimate for you. Premium includes cost optimisation - most builds can be made several times cheaper with the right model routing and caching.
Can you add AI to an app we already have?
That's the most common request. I'll work with your existing stack rather than asking you to rebuild. Java, Node, Python, React, PHP - I've worked in all of them.
What if AI turns out to be the wrong solution?
I'll tell you, in the first conversation, before you order. I've turned down work for exactly this reason. A rules engine or a better database query beats an LLM more often than the industry admits.
