What Is a Kinegram (Scanimation)?
- A motograph or barrier-grid animation is a type of optical illusion where a static image appears to move when a striped transparent overlay is slid across it.
What We Need From You:
- Just tell us your idea for the animation (a character, logo, gesture, etc.)
What Well Do:
- Well design a custom moving picture using this technique.
We will create two separate digital files:
- 1 × interlaced artwork (the picture)
- 1 × striped grid overlay
These are ready to print and use!
What You Need To Do:
- Print the picture on regular paper
- Print the striped grid on transparent film
- Slide the overlay across the picture - and watch it animate like magic!

What files will I receive?
You will receive two high-resolution files: 1) The interlaced image (the special picture). 2) The transparent overlay with black stripes (the grid). Both are prepared for professional or home printing.
How do I view the animation?
Print the interlaced image on regular paper and the striped grid on transparent film. Place the grid over the image and slide it slowly side to side — the animation will appear like magic!
