What is Vaultwarden and how is it different from Bitwarden?
Vaultwarden is an open-source server that is fully compatible with all official Bitwarden apps. Your team installs the same Bitwarden browser extension and mobile apps they may already know - but instead of Bitwarden’s servers storing your passwords your own server does.
Do I need to pay monthly after setup?
No. You own and run the server. Your only ongoing cost is hosting - typically $6 per month on Hetzner or DigitalOcean. No per-user fees unlike Bitwarden Business at $6 per user per month.
What do my team members need to install?
The standard Bitwarden app - available free on iOS Android Chrome Firefox Safari Edge and as a desktop app.
Can I migrate from LastPass or 1Password?
Yes. Standard and Premium packages include migration. I’ll export your existing passwords and import them cleanly into Vaultwarden so nothing is lost.
What is a domain name and do I need one?
A domain is your server’s address - for example passwords.yourcompany.com. It’s required for SSL to work properly. Domains cost around $10 to $15 per year. If you don’t have one message me and I’ll help you get one set up.
How secure is a self-hosted password manager?
