Why I'm qualified:
I am a white, trans, genderqueer person who identifies as gay/queer. I have written countless short stories and am currently writing a book that include LGBTQIA+ characters. I also minored in creative writing where we got sensitivity training on how to write fully fleshed out characters.
Some things I look for:
- Do the characters have stereotypical traits? Are those traits needed?
- What story lines do the characters get? Are those story lines perpetuating harmful beliefs or ideas?
- Do non-LGBTQIA+ characters treat the LGBTQIA+ characters well or poorly? Does this feel intentional?
- What words are used to describe the characters? Do I see any author bias in these descriptions?
- Do the LGBTQIA+ characters get the same amount of page space as non LGBTQIA+ characters relative to their importance in the book?

Absolutely not. Everyone has things to learn about this community and judging someone for what they do not know would be counterproductive to that learning. I approach every project from a place of assuming the writer has come with what they believe is a respectful point of view.
