If you're a self-published author, the amount of work you do on your book may come down to your budget.
If you can afford a developmental editor, copy editor, line editor, beta readers, and proofreader on top of a book cover artist and maybe someone to format your book for PDF and ePub, great!
But if that's out of your price range, an in-depth beta read can be an affordable way to get some necessary feedback on your story at any point in your publishing journey.
Beta readers will tell you about what it feels like to read the book: what grabs them, what puts them off, what makes them laugh, what bores them, what makes them cry.
Usually, authors hire beta readers after their book has been through a few rounds of editing.
These edits will tighten up the story structure, fix continuity errors, and polish the actual writing itself. That said, my philosophy is that you should hire beta (and sensitivity) readers when you want reader feedback on your book.

Can I contact you directly with questions before placing an order?
I'd really prefer that, actually! Not every author and beta reader are a perfect fit. Let's have a conversation about where you are in your publishing journey and what you want out of a beta reading, first, then decide if I'm the right person for you AND your book.
What's your background?
I'm an American, currently living and working in Japan. I'm a trans man, autistic, and have ADHD.
What's your editing experience?
6+ years freelance editing (fiction & nonfiction, native English & Japanese-to-English translations), 10+ years teaching ESL (English as Second Language) where I correct, review, and grade essays, poetry, fiction, book reports, etc.
What's your favorite fantasy series?
Tamora Pierce's "Protector of the Small" series, which is about a young girl who is the first in generations to be allowed to train as a knight. Pierce's books were my first (and possibly best) education in grounded, consistent fantasy worldbuilding that melts into the background.
What's your favorite sci-fi series?
Animorphs, hands down. The storytelling is in first person and uses a language level appropriate for middle-grade readers, but unapologetic about depicting colonization, racism, war, and PTSD. The series was my first lesson in how vital it is to make sure your ending fits the tone of your story.
Is fanfiction real writing?
Yes, absolutely. I'd argue that writing fanfiction is one of the best ways to get practice with storytelling (narrative pacing, character and plot arcs, characterization) without all the backend stress of worldbuilding. Plus, some AUs can get very close to being practically fully original.
