Should you buy a subscription/license for PLEX, Emby, Jellyfin (or the rest of the services)?
No, everything is FREE. Only thing you may need to purchase, is the PLEX app for iOS/Android (around 5$), if you think you'll need it in the future.
Is the PLEX Pass necessary?
Not at all. My configuration for a Fully Automated Media Server covers almost all the features you can get with a PLEX Pass.
