I will start by analyzing the story already there and take notes along the way. Next, we discuss and agree, I write an outline for the story, and on we go!

How are games novelized?
Many games have novelizations. Check out those for the Borderlands series as an example. They can either be novels that directly translate the story, often with more internal thought and possibly more added, or they can be stories that are in the world but otherwise not explored in the game.
