FAQ
Do you correct gramatical errors?
No. Beta reading is about the story, not grammar. I’ll let you know if a sentence is confusing, but I don’t correct spelling. For that, you need a proofreader.
How does your feedback differ for literary fiction and educational books?
Literary Fiction: I focus on character development, subtext, pacing, dialogue, and whether the story moved me emotionally. Educational: I focus on teaching methods. I assess whether the explanation is clear, whether the examples work and whether the text is too boring or overly academic.
I read heavy horror and gore. Do you accept this?
I accept psychological horror, suspense and moderate gore. I do not read scenes involving sexual torture or detailed extreme violence against children or animals. If in doubt, send me a summary of the level of violence before purchasing and I’ll confirm straight away.
You read cookery books/recipes. What do you assess?
I test for clarity. I’ll read the recipes as if I were making them at home. I’ll let you know if: the step-by-step instructions are confusing, measurements are missing, the order of the ingredients doesn’t match the method, or if the recipe introduction is engaging.
How does beta reading work for children’s books?
I read with the perspective of an adult who would buy the book. I assess whether the language is appropriate for the recommended age group, whether the moral of the story is clear without being overly didactic, and whether the illustrations you describe match the text.
Do you beta-read fanfiction? Do you know what IC and OOC mean?
Yes. I read fanfiction and I’m familiar with the terms. In the report, I’ll let you know if the characters are IC (in character) or OOC (out of character), if the plot respects the canon, and if the ship dynamics make sense. I just don’t accept fanfic with explicit erotic content.
