Do I need to send the English original?
It is not required, but it makes the work much better. With the source I can see where the meaning drifted, not just where the Russian reads awkwardly. Without it I still fix grammar, style and flow.
Can you edit a machine translation?
Yes, that is most of what I do. Machine output is usually accurate but reads as English wearing Russian words. I rebuild the sentences so a native reader stops noticing the translation.
