You’ll need a VPS (e.g., from Hetzner, Netcup, IONOS, etc.) with root access and a registered domain. If you're unsure, I can help you choose the right setup.
What software do you use?
I use Mailcow, a powerful open-source mail server suite based on Docker. It includes Postfix, Dovecot, rspamd, SOGo (webmail), Let's Encrypt, and more – all pre-configured to work seamlessly.
Is Mailcow beginner-friendly?
Yes. Despite being a professional-grade solution, Mailcow offers an intuitive web interface to manage mailboxes, domains, security settings, and more.
How secure is a self-hosted mail server?
Very secure when set up properly. I ensure best practices like SSL/TLS encryption, spam filtering with rspamd, and proper authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) are all in place.
Can I use multiple domains and email addresses?
Absolutely. Mailcow supports multiple domains and unlimited mailboxes or aliases.
